Research

Here at Butterfly Farms we study Southern California native butterflies. Using the Monarch as a teaching model, we research Western Monarch migration and our resident Monarchs. We have an actively growing and developing collaborative partnership with the Carlsbad office of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), raising threatened and endangered local butterfly species and their host plants.

Our Research Also Includes:

  • Tagging
  • Larvae Monitoring
  • Western Monarch Migration Patterns
  • Restoring Sensitive and Endangered Local Butterfly Species

Our research will help to expand knowledge of the species to better support ongoing conservation efforts of the Monarch butterfly, and other native butterfly species. Our flight vivarium offers the opportunity for students of all ages to learn about the lifecycle of butterflies and the threats to their habitats.
